What is your IT strategy for driving business agility and scale?

We have rolled out a solution for the first time, perhaps in the world, in a tea manufacturing unit using technology (with sensors) and IT. This solution rightly explains IT strategy for driving business agility and scale. We have successfully provided a top of the layer analytics platform for fully automated plant, currently at a single location. This solution leverages data assets currently deployed and also provides automated call to actions, thus reducing dependency on the need for human intervention for analysis or interpretation of data.

CTC manufacturing is one of the most modern processes in the world using IT and sensor technology. Managing huge data generated from the sensors and getting the right answers into the hands of employees fast enough was a constant struggle for our organization. Through this recently introduced system in one of our estates (MEENGLAS) we can monitor:

  • The withering fans – how many hours ON and how many hours OFF.
  • The current being consumed in the withering fans (in amperes).
  • The humidity of the rolling room.
  • The dry and wet bulb temperature in the rolling room.
  • How hard the CTC cutting has been adjusted.
  • The current being consumed in each cut (in amperes).
  • Whether the CTC machines are being constantly fed with withered leaf.
  • What are the temperatures in the CTC cuts.
  • Temperature of fermented ‘mal’ at the feeding end and the discharge end and also temperatures monitored at 3 different zones between feeding end and discharge end.

The above parameters can be monitored from our smart phone or PC sitting in our office or bungalow. This is an extremely ‘intelligent’ technology using sensors placed at strategic places, network connectivity, mobility and cloud connectivity enabling a person to observe the tea manufacturing process real time, from anywhere in the world. It’s a matter of great pride that we are again the First Group in tea to undertake the above path breaking mission and make it a success.

Digital Disruptions not only threaten the very core of an organization’s business but also present an opportunity to innovate and excel. How are you responding to the new changes and applying digital transformation strategy in your organization?

Digital transformation is probably not the best term to describe the realities it covers. Some prefer to use the term digital business transformation, which is more in line with the business aspect. However, as an umbrella term, digital transformation is also used for changes in meanings that are not about business in the strict sense but about evolutions and changes in, for instance, government and society.

Causes of Disruption and Transformation

  • Technological Innovations - it’s not the technology that drives the disruption or transformation. It’s how it is used and adopted by customers, partners, competitors and various stakeholders.
  • Customer behavior and demands - This so-called customer-induced transformation and disruption is not necessarily related to technology.
  • Ecosystem Induced - economical changes, demands from partners who want you to adapt, regulatory changes, the list is endless..
  • Businesses have always been changing and innovating, technologies always came with challenges and opportunities, regulations and ecosystems have always evolved.
  • Digital marketing, even if that’s an important part of the business activities and if it’s the context in which digital transformation is often used.
  • Digital customer behavior, although it plays a role and customers are increasingly 'digital and mobile.
  • Technological disruptions because the disruptions are always about customers, workers, markets, competitors and stakeholders, even if related to technological evolutions and knowing that ’emerging’ technologies indeed can have a 'disruptive' effect.
