  • Anjan Chatterjee
    Founder and Managing Director
    Speciality Restaurants

    Anjan Chatterjee

    Founder and Managing Director

    Speciality Restaurants Ltd.

Twenty seven years ago, Anjan Chatterjee, armed with his experience of hotel management (course in Hospitality at the Taratala Institute followed bya stint at Taj Hotels, Mumbai) and mediamarketing (Ananda Bazar Patrika) which honed his entrepreneurial skills, chucked a comfortable job to start his own venture.

He set up the advertising agency, Situations Advertising & Marketing Services (P) July 1985. After success with local clients came the first account with which Situations would prove its brand building capability – Cello. Beginning with an ad budget of Rs.3 lakh, it grew to be the largest manufacturer of pens in the country and today, is a Rs. 1000+ crore company. The second shot in the arm for Situations came in 1990 with the account of Jyothy Laboratories Ltd.withUjala Supreme becoming a case study in branding. In the course of time more accounts were bagged. Hygienic Research Institute with brands like Vasmol(Hair Dye) and Streax (Hair Colour), Everest Spices, Emami Ltd. (brand Fair and Handsome), Yardley (Deo’s, Soaps and Face Wash), Aramusk (Deo) to name only a few.

The agency has won numerous awards for its role in advertising and communication. Today its turnover is estimated to be more than Rs.100 crore.

However this hectic journey of building winning brands failed to subdue a long nurtured passion of Anjan Chatterjee - the passion for food. Speciality Restaurants took off with ‘Only Fish’ in 1992. The restaurant was born more out of the passion for experimenting with mouth-watering dishes, by of Anjan Chatterjee and his wife,Suchhonda. Its fan-club success even surprised even his fellow-foodies and partners.

Only Fish was later repositioned as ‘Oh! Calcutta’ to cater to a larger audience and the jaded taste buds of Mumbai woke up to the cuisine of a city never served before. The biggest challenge however was when it had to be replicated and opened in Kolkata, Bangalore, Pune and in Delhi where it draws a lot of dignitaries and foreigners. This was the beginning of a long and successful journey……

Today evening, about four thousand people will dine in eighty restaurants around twenty three cities. They’ll be served by three thousand five hundred passionate workers, making each guest feel special. Who in turn will spread the passion among more people they come in touch with. Making fifteen thousand people feel special is a regular day’s job at Specialty Restaurants. On weekends, the numbers are even happier. Welcome to the most unique ingredient to be used by a restaurant group – passion.

After the success of ‘Only Fish’, in early 1995, ‘Mainland China’, a speciality fine dining Chinese Restaurant was set up at the industrial hub ofSakinaka in Mumbai. Mainland China serves some of the most authentic Chinese cuisine this side of the ‘Great Wall’. Through a rare harmony of flavours from far flung provinces of China, hand picked ingredients and craftsmanship of Chinese master chefs, Mainland reveals the delicious secrets of Chinese cuisine. Serving five star food and ambience at non five star prices, Mainland China began to turn diners into followers all over the country.

Following the success of the Mumbai outlet, Mainland Chinaextended its presence in all major metros (with multiple outlets)and even in mini-metro’s and Tier – I & II cities viz. Guwahati, Bhubaneswar, Ludhiana, Nashik, Surat and many others. Today it has 47 outlets across the country and one in Dhaka. The group’s flagship brand, Mainland China is today one of the best fine dining restaurant chains in the country.

In 1999 Mainland China Bangalore bagged the coveted H & FS award for the best Oriental restaurant. This was followed with the Speciality Group of Restaurants winning many accolades and awards over the years from the Golden Spoon Award in 2008, 2009 and 2011, Times Good Food Award in 2009 & 2010.  Mainland China & Oh! Calcutta arealso listed among the top 200 restaurants in the Miele Guide, South East Asia’s Food Guide.

Restaurant brands Machaan, Sigree, Flame and Grilland followed in quick succession. Sweet Bengal, was born in Mumbai to realize his long cherished dream of making the famous ‘misthidoi’, ‘kheerkodom’ and the whole range of the delectable sweets of Bengal easily available for connoisseurs in Mumbai. Its popularity hasled to fourteen moreoutlets in Mumbai which serve the most authentic taste of Bengali sweets.

Anjan Chatterjee bends the rules of restaurant business, preferring original formats to tested and proven ones which could have yielded faster profits but had less emotional appeal to both the businessman and connoisseur in him. His original business recipe has been tested in all kinds of markets, from premier cities to second tier metros. And sets Anjan Chatterjee apart as a leader in his business.

Drawing new franchisees of Speciality Restaurants to the Group’s philosophy of originality and passion was a more daunting task but AnjanChatterjee’s leadership triumphed here too.

Going public held huge scope for the Group but it had its risks. However, the integrity and fundamental values of the Group saw it through the market’s lowest phase with a highly successful IPO in May 2012. The group got recognized as Speciality Restaurants Limited, the only listed company in the stand-alone fine dining category in India. With 94 outlets across the country and poised to cross 100 outlets and a turnover of Rs.250 cr. by the year-end, Speciality Restaurants crosses yet another a milestone with itspassionate  approach to business.

Not only does emotion and business mix well for Anjan Chatterjee. He is its outspoken ambassador and also the entrepreneur and leader that he is, because of it. His emotional attachment with Ananda Bazar Patrika too has grown in spite of the years and the scantiness of time and his adventures with food feature in a regular column in ABP Robibashor and Telegraph T2. His passion has kept him in touch with music and advertisement. And he still prefers to call Kolkata his home, apart from a hub for a major chunk of his business. Here’s a true son of the self confessed capital of passion.

  • Basu Chatterjee
Director, Film Maker, Writer and Producer

    Basu Chatterjee

Director, Film Maker, Writer and Producer

For long a political cartoonist of BLITZ weekly (19 years), Basu Chatterji’s entry into cinema was through film society movement. During his seven long years as an active member and secretary of Film Forum, a film society, he was exposed to creative and thought provoking films of various countries like France, Sweden, Italy, Japan etc unlike others in India who could see only Hollywood Films. Besides the secretary of Film Forum which became the largest film society in India he also became the Secretary of western Region of Federation of Film Societies of India for quite sometime. The exposure to the creative and other kind of cinema influenced him to venture into feature films in Hindi and his first such film was SARA AKASH (1970) which turned out to be a refreshing novel attempt to depict the everyday middle-class milieu. It was an instant success and he never looked back. Soon followed RAJANIGANDHA, CHITCHOR, CHHOTISl BAAT, KHATTA MEETHA, SWAMI, PASAND APNI APNI, SHAUKEEN and many more which established him as a pioneer or other kind of cinema. His first film SARA AKASH was shown at Locarno Film Festival and Toronto Film Festival. One of his film KAMLA Kl MAUT was shown at Cairo Film Festival. His forays into television also brought memorable serials like RAJANI, DARPAN, KAKKAJI KAHIN and BYOMKESIH BAKSHI. He also made feature films in Bengali, his first being HOTHAT BRISTI (1998), then CHUPU CHUPUI, TOK JHAL MISTI and the latest HOCHHETA KI? (2007).
