INFOCOM CXO ROUNDTABLE 08-09 - THE DELHI ROUND on August 1, 2008

Date: August 1st, 2008
Venue: India Habitat Centre, New Delhi
Time: 7.00 pm
Topic: “Connecting the Un-connect - Broadband  Way”

Sify Broadband

ISPAI ISPAI
Session Outline:

Broadband is fast becoming the engine of growth for any economy. Broadband can make a profound impact on the way business is conducted both internally among employees, and externally with customers, suppliers and other stakeholders. Broadband means that many small businesses can finally exploit the full potential of already familiar communication tools such as the web and email. Development of broadband is crucial to the future of education and learning. For people who work from home - broadband is indispensable. Broadband is now the highway where countless home workers travel to research projects, deliver work and meet with their customers and collaborators. It's utility that means more people can live where they want, and work when they want.

India has established its position in IT/ ITES sector and is fast becoming an IT/Out sourcing hub. Our mobile success story is catching the world's attention. Though we are adding about 8 million mobile connections per month, however penetration in rural and remote areas is far below with about 9 in comparison with 66 in urban areas. We have so far not been able to replicate the same in the Internet/Broadband segment. We have barely about 10 million Internet connections with 4 million broadband subscribers and when it comes to rural areas Broadband penetration is negligible.

Government as well as Industry is seriously concerned about connecting the rural/remote areas with a telecommunication link. One way could be we connect the un-connect through a broadband pipe wherein voice could be one application. A PC with broadband connection at village/panchayat will make all the difference. It will not only help to bridge the digital divide but also empower the rural citizens of our country as it has done in several developing and developed economy.

Format: The format of the Roundtable would be a Panel Discussion which would have esteemed panelists from reputed organizations. Each speaker would be given time of 5-7 minutes. This would be followed by an open house Q & A session. A moderator would preside over the discussions.
